BOISE, Idaho — On Thursday, Mayor Lauren McLean delivered her 2025 State of the City address at the Boise Centre, highlighting progress in affordable housing, public safety, and quality-of-life investments.
"When we put people first, we create and sustain a city for everyone," she stated.
McLean celebrated recent achievements, including efforts to address housing and homelessness, job creation, and below national average unemployment rates.
“Since day one, housing has been my top priority," McLean said. "I’ve sought every opportunity with an incredible network of nonprofits, businesses, and generous community members. Together, we’ve invested in hundreds of affordable homes across the city, often co-located with services like childcare and parks, so families can thrive.”
After recent legislation banning public camping in large Idaho cities like Boise, Mayor McLean spoke on her plans to help Boise's homeless population.
“On tough issues like homelessness, I’m committed as ever to finding real solutions, to preventing the challenges we’ve seen in other cities," McLean said. “We set a goal of creating 250 homes for folks exiting homelessness and we’re on track."
The mayor highlighted her goal to keep crime down in the city, which she says is the safest it's been in 24 years.
“In a city for everyone, safety matters. I remain steadfast in my commitment to keeping crime rates low and providing comfort and security - and timely emergency services - in every neighborhood in our city," said McLean.
As for the city's climate goals...
“We're electrifying all of our city buildings - fire stations, libraries, and airport. And we're on track to meet our city goal of being powered by 100% clean energy by 2030," added McLean.
Idaho News 6 spoke with attendees after the event about the mayor's goals.
“I think it is always good to hear about where she wants to take the city and her commitment to open space and parks," said Jim Otradosky, a Boise Resident.
“There’s so many things we could touch on that could be different, let’s highlight and celebrate what is working and create a vision for the future and lets all get behind it and go with her," said Joellen Watson, who will soon move to Downtown Boise.
Mayor McLean also announced plans for the upcoming year, such as new artwork and amenities at the Boise Airport, and provided insights into the budget proposal for fiscal year 2026.
“Though we have to tighten our belts and look for ways to stretch a dollar this year, I’m proud of the investments we made in previous years, which are now coming to life,” McLean continued. “We are making smart investments, supporting our business community, and preparing for the future.”
