IDAHO — More than 40 million Americans are expected to hit the road this Memorial Day weekend, setting a new travel record despite rising gas prices nationwide.
Watch: How neighbors are handling this years travel plans
Right along Highway 55 in Horseshoe Bend, families rolled through local gas stations Friday, making one last pit stop before kicking off their holiday weekend adventures. With coolers packed, snacks loaded, and tanks filled, travelers were eager to trade city traffic for Idaho's mountains, lakes, and campgrounds.
One family heading to the YMCA family camp at Horse Thief Reservoir said the trip has become a yearly tradition.
"We're headed up to the YMCA family camp at Horse Thief Reservoir. It is so fun. Love it for the whole family," said one member of the Stringham family.
For the Stringhams, the holiday getaway is one they say isn't stopping, even with higher gas prices this year. They noted their hybrid van has helped offset some of the added cost at the pump.
"Makes the hybrid van so much better," Mr. Stringham said.
Gas prices across the Gem State have continued climbing in recent months, with some Idaho drivers paying nearly $4.69 a gallon this Memorial Day weekend. For travelers Emma and Ella, this year's trip came with a shock at the pump.
"It's really expensive. Yeah, you fill up already.
Neighborhood Reporter Leslie Solis asked them how much money it took to fill up their tank.
"We only filled up half a tank, and it was $50. Yeah, no, that's a double, way more than we're used to," Ella and Emma said.
Officials are reminding drivers heading out this weekend to drive safely, slow down, and stay alert. This weekend marks the start of what is known as the "100 Deadliest Days" on Idaho roads.
