BOISE, Idaho — It's August and that means the first day of school is right around the corner. For many students in the Treasure Valley, school supplies can get expensive.

That's why local non-profits are teaming up to give out free backpacks and school supplies this weekend. The supplies are coming from donations from Leaders of the Pack and Boise community schools.

Organizers say it's all about lending a helping hand.

"It doesn't matter financial situation or anything like that. We just want to make sure all the kids that have a need for a backpack get one. We just want to see smiles on their faces. We want them to have a good time," said Brian White, director of Leaders of the Pack Inc.

There will be fun activities, refreshments and music at the giveaway event. It runs from 4 to 8 p.m. this Saturday and Fairmont Junior High School.
