LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) -- A 28-year-old Idaho man who was injured in a shootout with police has been upgraded to satisfactory condition.

Joseph Case, of Lewiston, was shot Saturday in a brief gunfight with Nez Perce County sheriff's deputies.

The Lewiston Tribune reported that County Chief Deputy Scot Gleason said Monday that one deputy returned fire after Case shot at deputies.

Case was wanted on a misdemeanor warrant when they tried to pull him over. Case led officers on a chase that was discontinued over safety concerns.

Deputies spotted the vehicle again and pursued it until it parked behind a business, where they said Case got out and started shooting.

Gleason said an independent Idaho State Police investigation of the shooting should wrap up by the end of the week.
