TWIN FALLS, Idaho — Residents in the South Carey zone from Preacher Bridge on the east side of Highway 26 to Red Hawk Lane are under Level 2 "Set" evacuations as the Wildhorse Fire continues moving toward the community.
Level 2 evacuations have also been issued for the East Carey Zone.
Highway 26 between Richfield and Carey reopened Wednesday night after being closed for several hours.
The U.S. Wildland Fire Service Great Basin says firefighters are conducting firing operations ahead of the Wildhorse Fire in an effort to slow its progression. Aircraft are also working along the fire perimeter to help slow the spread.
Officials are asking people to avoid the area to give crews room to work.
The sheriff’s office said conditions can change quickly, especially with shifting winds.
Residents are encouraged to make sure they can receive emergency alerts, keep vehicles fueled and ready to leave, and gather medications, important documents and other essential items.
People with livestock or other animals should also begin making preparations now. Officials are asking residents to check on family members, elderly neighbors and anyone who may need help if an evacuation is ordered.
The Wildhorse Fire was sparked by lightning on Monday during a storm that started several fires across southern Idaho.
The fire was initially estimated at about 2,000 acres before growing to an estimated 50,000 acres by Wednesday evening. It is currently 10% contained, according to the NIFC.
Firefighters had previously reported that calmer winds improved conditions Tuesday, but rough terrain continued to make direct access difficult.
Residents should continue checking updates from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office for any road closures, evacuation notices or other changes related to the fire.
Crews are also working other fires in the southern portion of the state, with some prompting evacuations.
