Former Nampa police officer running for sheriff

CANYON COUNTY — A former Nampa police officer says he wants to be the next Canyon County sheriff. Nick Schlader officially threw his hat in the ring this week.

Schlader says the main challenge facing the sheriff's office right now is building a new jail, an effort voters have overwhelmingly rejected four times. He says he wants ideas from everyone, including those working for the sheriff's department.

"My goal is to go in and hear their concerns because they have an investment with the county itself, to see what options they have because I am not going to have every idea, but I know we can all agree we need a larger jail," said Schlader.

Schlader is the first candidate to announce their run for the sheriff's position. No word yet if current sheriff Kieran Donahue will be running for re-election.
