A domestic dispute led to a deadly officer-involved shooting in a Meridian neighborhood Saturday afternoon.

It happened around 12:30 on the 800 block of West Newport Street, near the intersection of Cherry Lane and Meridian Road.

A friend of the woman who lives in the home tells 6 On Your Side a man entered her residence and grabbed a knife, prompting a call to police. When officers from Meridian PD arrived on scene, the calling party says he heard three shots fired in the home's backyard.

"Upon arrival, officers witnessed blood near the front door and made contact with the victim who stated the suspect was tearing up the house and grabbing knives," a press release from Meridian Police stated. "Officers located the suspect in the backyard of the home and attempted negotiating with him. The suspect made statements to the effect of, 'I am not going back to jail,' then pulled a handgun from his waistband and one officer fired a taser and one officer fired his weapon striking the suspect in the chest."

Officers rendered aid to the suspect who was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Ada County Coroner will conduct an autopsy on the suspect and release the identity upon notification of his family.

The Critical Incident Task Force is conducting the investigation into this shooting, just like they do for all officer-involved shootings in Ada County. Boise Police Department will be the lead, assisted by Ada County Sheriff’s, Garden City Police and the Idaho State Police.
