The owner of downtown Boise’s Mai Thai restaurant says he is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the young man who reportedly ripped away part of the restaurant’s sidewalk café railing and stole a small Buddha statue atop it.

Owner Glen Robell told Idaho on Your Side the theft happened about 7 a.m. on Saturday, August 13th.

The restaurant is at 750 W. Idaho Street.

The theft was captured by a surveillance camera.

The video shows two young people walking along a sidewalk, approaching the restaurant.

One person appears to be wearing an Oakland A’s baseball cap and carrying two drinks.

The other –- a man wearing a dark-colored T-shirt with the word “Spicy!” on it –- pauses and appears to check how secure a section of the railing is. When one section breaks free, the man takes off running with it. The other person follows him. Both then disappear from the camera’s view.

Robell says some sections of the railing, including the one stolen, have nine-inch tall Buddha statues attached. He said the section of railing and the statue are valued at about $500.

The railing was only temporally attached, because such railings are not allowed to be permanently affixed to city sidewalks, he explained.

Police are investigating.

Anyone with information about the theft is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 343-COPS (2677), www.343COPS.com, or leave a tip using the “P3 Tips” app for your mobile device.
