In March the Boise State football team said goodbye to Fruitland native Joe Martarano who decided to leave the team and pursue playing professional baseball.

Well, today at Coach Harsin's gained another local baseball player that is leaving the diamond for the gridiron.

Mason Smith who played for Rocky Mountain has been playing minor league ball for the past four seasons and will join the Broncos as a walk-on.

The Meridian native was a fourth-round pick by the San Diego Padres back in 2013.  In his senior season with Rocky, he was a second-team All-5A SIC Linebacker.

In his senior season with Rocky Mountain, he was a second-team All-5a sic linebacker.

“Here’s a guy who is an athlete who still wants to compete and wants to compete in football.  He looks great like he’s ready to go. Don’t know if he’s football-ready at all, that’s going to take time, but here’s an opportunity.

He’s going to be going to school here, being around him, he’s got the type of character you’re looking for,” said, Head Coach Bryan Harsin.
