The Broncos didn’t wait long to find a replacement for Yates. They have decided to promote from within hiring linebackers coach Andy Avalos.
Avalos has coached the Bronco linebackers the past two seasons after being the program's defensive line coach for two seasons. The Broncos were 12th in the FBS this past season in total defense with just under 320 yards per game and 18th in scoring defense. During his two seasons as linebackers coach the team had 10 fumble recoveries, 8 interceptions, and forced 8 fumbles. When he was in charge of the defensive line he had five players earn All Mountain West honors.
New defensive coordinator Andy Avalos had this to say about his new position.
“I am thankful to Coach Harsin and Boise State for this opportunity,” Avalos said. “It is an awesome challenge that I couldn’t be more excited to be taking on. The Bronco Way has shaped me as a person, a player, and a coach. It is an unbelievable honor to now be able to share that same thing with our current and future players.
“Defensively, we will continue to build with the key players we return, and focus on developing our young guys. I can’t wait to get in the meeting room and on the field with our players.” Said Defensive Coordinator Andy Avalos.
