BAKER CITY, ORE — UPDATE: Westbound I-84 near Ontario. Parts of the freeway were closed since 8 Wednesday night due to a three truck crash, one of which caught on fire. The burning vehicle and challenging tow operations caused the lengthy closure which started in La Grande and later moved to Ontario because of the lack of safe truck parking spaces. Travelers in the area are reminded to expect winter condtions and to drive with extra caution.

ORIGINAL STORY: Westbound I-84 remains closed to all traffic in Baker City, Ore. at Exit 302 and closed to trucks at Exit 374. The closure extended to Baker City and Ontario due to there being no more room for commercial vehicles in La Grande or Baker City.

The closure is a result of three semi trucks crashing, with one catching on fire, 27 miles west of La Grande. The fire is now out and one truck has been removed from the Interstate. The other two trucks are still there, and other work has to be done before the freeway reopens. Drivers are urged to stay put, and crews will open the route as soon as it is safe. The time estimate is at least another couple hours.

OR245 between US26 and OR7 is also closed and not a safe alternate route for I-84. The closure may extend to Ontario for all vehicles. Click here more closure details in that area.

If you plan to use alternate routes, expect winter conditions throughout the region. The eastbound freeway remains open. For updated conditions, click here or call (511)800-977-6368.
