Two Utah men are in the Ada County Jail, charged with felony trafficking in marijuana after deputies found more than four pounds of pot in their car during traffic stop on Gowen Road Sunday afternoon.
Barry W. Herbert Jr., 32, of Roosevelt, Utah and Donald Ray Hatch, 37, of La Point, Utah are both set to make their initial court appearances Monday afternoon.
Hatch, who deputies say was driving the car, is also charged with misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance and providing false information to police officer.
Deputies began their investigation just before 5 p.m. Sunday after they saw a white Nissan sedan going west on Gowen Road go past the limit line and pull into crosswalk while there was a red light at the Eisenmann Road intersection, said Ada County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Patrick Orr.
“The car then quickly turned right on to Eisenmann road. Deputies pulled the car over moments later. That’s when Hatch gave deputies false information when they asked who he was,” Orr said.
“A K-9 unit dog then detected the presence of drugs inside the car. Deputies searched the car and found several heat-sealed packages of marijuana inside a duffel bag in the trunk -- weighing about 4.3 pounds,” Orr stated.
Deputies say they also found several items of drug paraphernalia in the car, including several syringes and equipment used to produce Cannabidiol oil.
Both men were then arrested and booked into the Ada County Jail.
The crime of trafficking in marijuana is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
