MIDDLETON, Idaho — The Southwest Chapter of Idaho Credit Unions is collecting donations for area food banks in a unique--and fast--way.

Eight credit unions, including CapEd Federal Credit Union, ICON Credit Union, Northwest Christian Credit Union and Simplot Employees Credit Union, all gathered Wednesday morning at Ridley's Grocery Store in Middleton for the Second Annual Super Market Dash. Each credit union committed $500 for their shopping dash, combined with special discounts from Ridley's so the group could grab as many items as possible.

A team of two from each credit union got a chance to run through Ridley's, stuffing as much into their shopping carts as they could. The teams spent time with their food banks to figure out what donations are most needed, helping them pinpoint items to focus on during the Dash. The annual Dash comes at a critical time for many food pantries.

"We’re going into the winter season, and we know that there’s going to be an increased need for people to have food that really can least afford it right now or don’t have access to it, so the food banks are their access to food,” said Val Brooks, CEO of the Simplot Employees Credit Union.

Food banks benefiting from this year's Super Market Dash include: Ronald McDonald House Food Pantry, Middleton Food Bank, Love Inc. Food Pantry, Idaho Foodbank, and Salvation Army Food Bank. Clarity Credit Union, Idaho Central Credit Union, Mountain America Credit Union and Pioneer Federal Credit Union also took part in this year's Dash that raised nearly $3,000 worth of food donations.
