Police are warning residents in Treasure Valley of phone scammers who claim to be from the Meridian Police Department and demanding money.

The scammers allegedly tell the victim that they have an unpaid ticket, a warrant for their arrest or has missed jury duty and they need to pay a fine immediately to avoid being arrested.

The scammers typically ask the victim to purchase a pre-paid credit card and then provide them with the number; however, they may also ask for cash, a cashier check, a money wire, or some other form of payment.

Many people have received these types of calls over the last week or so and some have sent money to the scammers.

Meridian Police Department said they or any other local law enforcement agency, will never call a citizen to solicit or demand money for any reason.

Meridian Police ask if you receive a call like this to immediately hang up and report it to local police.
