BOISE, Idaho — The American Red Cross is asking the public to help fill a blood shortage. The COVID-19 pandemic has put some blood types in short supply.

Blood banks are in platelets and blood type O. The Red Cross says donations taper off during the holiday season, but the need for blood does not.

This Friday and Saturday, local first responders are rolling up their sleeves and giving the gift of life at the Boise Towne Square Mall.

"People are anxious to get out there and help and we can't even say thank you enough to the donors who continually come out and offer help to people in need," said Margee Sell, account manager at American Red Cross.

In the Treasure Valley, the Red Cross has a donation center off Franklin Road in Boise, as well as multiple traveling buses. A donation generally takes less than an hour.
