COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) -- The Kootenai County Prosecutor's Office will seek the death penalty for a man who is accused of killing a police officer and stealing his patrol car I northern Idaho.

The Spokesman-Review reported that prosecutors filed a notice on Thursday in 1st District Court to try the slaying of Coeur d'Alene Police Sgt. Greg Moore as a capital crime.

Investigators allege that Jonathan Renfro, who was on parole, shot Moore on May 5 as the officer questioned him because he feared Moore would find a handgun in his pocket -- a parole violation.

Moore died later that evening.

Renfro's trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 6.
