STANLEY — With some seventy percent containment of the 324-acre Canyon Fire, burning fourteen miles west of Stanley, firefighters say they have made significant progress toward possible containment by August 9. “Crews will continue to secure, patrol and monitor lines for flare ups along all sides, and particularly along the northern flank near the West Fork of Canyon Creek,” said Boise National Forest spokesperson Venetia Gempler.

Demobilization will begin within the next few shifts, she added, sending many of the resources to other fires or back to their home units.

A smattering of lightning and spotty rain occurred during the arrival of a dry cold front Tuesday evening. Aerial detection patrols have been ordered to look for new ignitions. “Resources will respond to any new fires or hold-overs that flare up in the next few days. The next frontal system is predicted to arrive over southern Idaho by Friday,” Gempler said.

Currently, there are 143 personnel on the fire -- including four hand crews, three engines, two helicopters and one water tender.

Both lanes on this section of Idaho State Highway 21 are open. Drivers are asked to drive slow down for firefighter and public safety. Bull Trout and Martin Lake Campgrounds are open.

Fuel pockets within the interior of the fire perimeter will continue to burn, producing scattered smoke plumes. Experts expect smoke from the Canyon Fire and other nearby fires may affect the overall air quality of this area.

The Canyon Fire is located southeast of Bull Trout Campground, within the Lowman Ranger District. It is a lightning-caused fire and was first reported at about 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 14.
