A group in Nampa collected tattered American flags Saturday afternoon to retire them in a proper ceremony later this year.

The Elks Lodge collects the flags every year to show respect for the flags while honoring the proud symbol of the United States.

Federal law states "an old flag that is no longer suitable for display must be destroyed in a dignifying way." Steve Mcnearney, with Nampa Elks Lodge says it's important to show respect.

"We do this so they are retired properly some just like to throw them in the trash and we like to do them in the proper manner to dispose of them," Mcnearney said.

People can drop off their worn out flags at Elks Lodge anytime during the year, but if you'd like to dispose of a flag yourself, the proper way to do it is to burn or recycle it.
