BOISE, Idaho — More affordable housing is coming to the Treasure Valley through a partnership with Saint Alphonsus Health System and LEAP Housing Solutions.

The partnership will create the first land trust specific to affordable housing in the Valley, with plans to build new four bedroom houses for low income families, according to a news release.

The development, known as Caritas Commons, will have 14 new homes made from upcycled steel cargo containers, according to the release. The project, which will be the largest affordable housing project in the area in 25 years, is financed by Idaho Housing and Finance Association and NewWest Community Capital. The new community will be located in West Boise on Shields Avenue near Old Horseshoe Bend Road.

“The data is clear – The 2020 Saint Alphonsus Community Health Needs Assessment identified safe, affordable housing as the No. 1 priority among residents and community partners in the region. Affordable housing is directly related to health outcomes. As a trusted health partner for life, we are committed to caring about patient needs, including the need for a safe, affordable home,” said Jennifer Palagi, DNP, MPH, RN, Vice President, Community Health & Well-Being at Saint Alphonsus, in the release.

The first four homes will be available beginning January 2021 and open to households that earn 80% or less than area median income, according to the release. Interested buyers can certify their income levels on the Finally Affordable website.
