A local pageant winner is helping child abuse victims one pie at a time.

The Miss Gem County pageant winner is dedicating her senior year to helping Family Advocates, a Boise based nonprofit which represents children in court who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect.

Several community officials, including the Gem County Fire Chief, took a pie in the face to raise awareness.

The Pie-In-The-Face event is the first of several events Miss Gem County is having to help children with similar experiences to her own.

" I was actually born into a neglectful and abusive home, so I wanted to use my story to raise awareness about and tell people about the truth about this hidden epidemic in America,” said Miss Gem County Julianna Devalaar.

More than 3000 kids in Idaho were removed from their homes last year. Devalaar will compete in Miss Idaho next June.
