CASSIA COUNTY, Idaho — Fire crews continue battling the Summit Creek Fire in the Oakley Basin and Cache Peak area of Cassia County after the wildfire grew overnight and remained uncontained Tuesday morning.

The Idaho Department of Lands previously said the fire started around 2 p.m. on Memorial Day. Officials say lightning sparked the fire.

According to the Cassia County Sheriff’s Office, dispatchers received a large number of calls about the fire on Monday afternoon. The sheriff’s office said the land falls under U.S. Forest Service jurisdiction, and federal crews responded immediately.

Officials said the fire was last estimated at 1,273 acres as of Tuesday afternoon.

The U.S. Forest Service deployed air resources Monday evening, including large air tankers and a helicopter, while additional crews and equipment remained on order.

Aerial suppression efforts continued on Tuesday.

Wildland fire crews are actively working to keep the fire contained to an area that is north of Castle Rock State Park, west of Mount Independence, and south/east of Oakley.

The public is asked to avoid the area.
