BOISE, Idaho — Hefty announced Monday it is discontinuing its ReNew Orange Bag program across the country, including in Boise.
The program, in place for more than a decade nationwide and in Boise since 2018, allowed Boise residents options to recycle certain plastics that were otherwise difficult to recycle.
In a press release on Monday, Hefty said what while participation in the program remained strong, it wasn’t able to develop the recycling infrastructure to meet community demands.
Boise residents have used the program to recycle candy wrappers, foam packaging and plastic wrap - items not accepted in the city’s regular recycling program.
“It’s disappointing to see the Orange Bag program come to an end after keeping approximately 2,000 tons of plastic out of our local landfill since 20818,” Boise Public Works Director Steve Burgos said Monday in a press release. “It is even more critical now that we remain mindful of what we are buying and how much waste we are creating, as we work toward a resilient future.”
Bags will remain available for purchase at participating Boise-area retailers through the end of 2026, as supplies last. The bags will be collected through June 30, 2027. After that date, items previously placed in the bags will need to be placed in the trash.
The city says residents can contact Hefty for return and refund instructions for any bags not used by June 30, 2027.
