Police have questioned four juveniles -- and have charges pending against one -– in relation to a Wednesday night fire at the Memorial Park in Weiser.
The fire was reported about 10 p.m.
“Someone used paper or other materials to start a fire in the sawdust,” said Weiser Police Chief Carl Smith. The sawdust had recently been donated to help provide a softer “landing area,” for children using the playground equipment, the Chief explained.
Flames only did minimal damage to the equipment.
“The park won’t be re-opened until it’s cleaned up,” Smith said.
The juvenile suspect remains at large.
City managers are working to trying to determine how much it will cost to repair the damage.
