BOISE — Good news for those Idahoans needing driver’s licenses renewed, you can now do it online. Well, most of you at least. If you want the Star Card, you're still going to have to head to the Driver License Division, but if you aren't getting the Star Card and you're between the ages of 21 and 69, there's a good chance you can renew online.
"It's available to most Idahoans that are renewing a four-year, class-D license," said Alberto Gonzalez, DMV Administrator at the Idaho Transportation Department. “Most Idahoans” includes U.S. citizens between the ages of 21 and 69, whose last renewal was for less than four years ago, and those with a valid driving privilege. If you meet those qualifications, you'll be approved for a four-year license or ID card renewal. But of course, there are some things that will still drive you to the DMV.
"Commercial Driver's Licenses cannot be renewed online. Folks that are renewing eight-year licenses are also not able to do that," said Gonzalez. Other things that cannot be done online are name changes, and upgrades to the Star Card, Idaho's Real I.D.
"We hope that this is going to not only add customer convenience, but reduce some of the congestion that we've seen in the metro areas," said Gonzalez. The wait times midday at the Ada County Driver License Division, sit right around two or more hours, and Gonzalez said once summer rolls around, that number could take an uptick.
So for those who qualify, the hope is to relieve the wait for the people who do have to go to the Driver License Division. And it isn't only driver's licenses that can be renewed and obtained online, but also vehicle license plates, duplicates, and come July 1st, Services will be available for commercial truck registrations, and oversize trip permits. While all of this could be helpful for a lot of Idahoans, ITD still strongly encourages the Real I.D.
"Our leading message is go get a Star Card," said Gonzalez. If you plan to fly domestically and you don't want to carry your passport, you'll need the Star Card before October 1, 2020.
If you do apply online for your Idaho license renewal, ITD says you should receive your license by mail within seven business days.
