ISP urges everyone to drive safe during winter conditions after close call

BOISE, Idaho — The Idaho State Police (ISP) is urging drivers to slow down and drive at speeds that are safe for winter conditions.

This morning, two ISP troopers were helping people involved in a non-injury crash in the far left lane of westbound I-184 near the Flying Wye. A sedan going too fast for the conditions could not stop and is captured on video driving through the scene on the median side between the patrol cars and the concrete barrier, according to a release.

Right before the sedan went through, the ISP trooper in the first car had walked in that same area as he returned to his car. As the sedan passed, the trooper hit his car horn to alert the second trooper, who was still standing in the median.

Nobody was injured during the incident, which remains under investigation. Troopers hope the close call reminds drivers that speed limits are for ideal conditions.

When roads are covered with snow, ice, or slush, drivers need to:

• Slow down and adjust speed for safe travel in winter driving conditions
• Always slow down and move over for emergency vehicles
• Recognize that slower speeds allow for safe distance to slow down further or stop if needed
• Be sure tires have enough tread depth for winter conditions

Between midnight and 11 a.m., ISP responded to 20 crashes and nine slide-offs on I-84. Ada County Dispatch says they logged a total of 33 crashes, six of which had injuries, and seven slide-offs between midnight and 3 p.m.
