Idaho State Police arrest 2 in Bingham County

BLACKFOOT, Idaho — Idaho State Police (ISP) arrested two men Monday in Bingham County. At about 2 p.m., ISP came in contact with 23-year-old Gustavo Chavez, of Idaho Falls, at the Blackfoot rest area. Chavez was driving a 1995 Nissan pickup with 19-year-old Jose Moreno, of Shelley. Chavez ran on foot and Moreno was later detained and arrested. There was a gun in the Nissan pickup.

At 5:30 P.M. Monday, ISP made contact with Chavez at N 150 W/W 1050 N in Bingham County. Chavez had barricaded himself in a citizen's flatbed farm pickup. Officers and deputies from supporting agencies tried to talk Chavez out of the pickup for almost two hours. Chavez failed to comply to orders, and was taken into custody at about 7:30 p.m. He was apprehended from the rear floorboard of the pickup while laying under a blanket with a loaded gun.

Chavez was transported to the Bingham County jail and was charged with a misdemeanor warrant, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. He was also charged with resisting and obstructing a law enforcement officer, operating a vehicle with the owners consent, providing false information to an officer and being a convicted felon possessing a firearm.

Moreno was also taken to the Bingham County Jail, charged with a felony warrant, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. He was also charged with resisting and obstructing a law enforcement officer, providing false information to an officer and being a convicted felon possessing a firearm.

Idaho State Police was assisted by the Bonneville County Sheriff's Office and Bingham County Sheriff's Office.
