BOISE, Utah — Hundreds of trees will be provided free of charge to Boise residents in a continuing effort to grow the city's community forest.
The City of Boise and Trees Idaho will provide 400 trees of different varieties to residents through the Elaine Clegg City of Trees Challenge.
Eastern Redbud, Serviceberry, American Hornbeam, Black Tupelo, and Chokecherry are among the trees being made available, with Trees Idaho providing a full list and description of all trees.
Since its inception in 2020, the City of Trees Challenge has planted over 21,000 urban trees throughout Boise, as well as 235,000 forest seedlings in the Boise National Forest. The goal is to plant 100,000 trees in the city, which would equal one for every household.
Starting Sept. 1, Boise residents can CLICK HERE to reserve a tree, and will be limited to one tree per house while supplies last. All trees will be given to residents at no cost. Once reserved, the trees will be delivered to the homes that had requested them in late October, "and will be approximately four to six feet tall in seven- to 15-gallon pots."
According to organizers, comparable trees to those being made available through the program typical sell for up to $200.
