One Idaho congressman is taking steps to fight obesity.
After being told that he needed to lose weight, Mike Simpson decided to take his weight loss journey to the capital.
In June of last year, he started a virtual step challenge from D.C. to Boise. About 300 people joined Simpson in the 2,963-mile walk.
"In this country, obesity is the leading cause of illness and if you look at the number of diseases that we could prevent by people just being aware of their health status and their obesity. It would be the greatest savings health care dollars in the nation and it would be great for them."
Simpson has dropped 70 pounds since.
Participants who completed the challenged received a certificate on Friday at the Capital in celebration.
Simpson encourages everyone to walk at least 10,000 steps a day to keep the doctor away.
