Emmett Middle School will close Dec. 5 to undergo a deep cleaning due to a number of staff out because of coronavirus.

The school district announced Thursday the middle school will close Friday as 10 staff members are out sick with COVID-19 or are in quarantine and will go through a deep cleaning. The school was not able to fill the vacant positions with substitutes, which left three jobs unfilled today, the district said.

The school will just shut down for the day and athletic activities will not be canceled, the district announced. Face coverings have been worn at the school and most of the cases have come from outside the district, according to a news release from the district.

“We can control what happens in the schools during school time, but we are not able to stop the spread in homes and the community,” Superintendent Craig Woods said in a statement. "We continue to ask parents to contact their school office if children are sick or people in the household have tested positive for COVID. This early information helps us look at ways to contain outbreaks.”

The district plans to keep schools open for in-person learning through Dec. 18, when schools close for holiday break, and are set to resume Jan. 4, 2021.

Students can still pickup meals Friday from 12:45 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Emmett Middle School and Shadow Butte Elementary School. The district asks that parents pick up the meals.
