BOISE, Idaho — The City of Boise will be the owner of a nearly five-acre lot next to Franklin Park on the Central Bench.

The city decided it will pay Maverik Incorporated just over 1.8 million dollars for the land. The space, located off Franklin and Orchard, could potentially be used for affordable housing. The City of Boise intends to work closely with the area's neighborhood association to determine the best use for the space.

"The neighborhood was really engaged with Maverick on their plans for that, said Mike Journee, a spokesperson for the City of Boise. "They really love the new park in that neighborhood and what we have planned for that, and so we want to continue that process and make sure that where we end up is someplace the neighborhood is gonna really like"

The empty lot used to be the historic Franklin Elementary school and then it was to be the site of a new Maverik convenience store.

While the purchase has been approved, the city has a 90 day period to ensure it has covered all its bases before the sale is final. Maverik decided to sell the land after it's development plans were met with opposition from the nearby community.
