A southwestern Idaho man who broke into his estranged wife's home and fatally shot another man has been sentenced to life in prison.

The Idaho Press-Tribune reports 39-year-old Phillip Cabrera was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty in February to first-degree murder and assault on a law enforcement officer as part of a plea deal that eliminated the death penalty.

Authorities say Cabrera entered his estranged wife's home in Nampa in April 2017 and fatally shot 34-year-old Andrew L. Shepard of Caldwell.

Canyon County Deputy Prosecutor Monica Morrison says Cabrera believed his wife was cheating on him. Morrison told the court that Cabrera has shown no remorse for the killing.

Public defender Randall Scott Grove says Cabrera does have remorse and regret.

Cabrera declined to give a statement in court.
