A group of local organizations are teaming up to provide free assistance and legal help Saturday, Dec. 16, to people applying for citizenship in Caldwell.

Maria Andrade with Andrade Legal in Boise, says anyone with a permanent resident card can register for Saturday’s event, named “Citizenship Day,” at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church.

“Citizenship Day allows us to bring, essentially, a law office to do a particular service to a community in a place where they’re comfortable, on a day — on a Saturday — that’s easy to access, and without the financial obstacles,” Andrade said.

Andrade says thousands of Idaho residents are eligible for citizenship, but don’t apply due to a variety of factors, including lack of financial resources and assistance.

Citizenship Day, she says, is the answer to that. It is organized by the Idaho Organizing Project, with assistance from the Community Council of Idaho, the Mexican Consulate in Boise, Andrade Legal, and other local groups.

The group is planning on offering additional workshops across the state in 2018.

You can register for the event by calling (208) 614-1968.
