A Caldwell educator received Idaho's 2018 Teacher of the Year award in her classroom Thursday, Sept. 14.

State Superintendent Sherri Ybarra surprised Becky Mitchell, a teacher at Vision Charter School in Caldwell, with the award.

Mitchell is a 20-year educator and currently teaches English, physical science, drama and broadcasting at the school.

She was in the running for the award with 10 other Idaho teachers.

"We do what we do every single day, not knowing if anybody is watching," Mitchell said. "So to know, not only that somebody is watching, but they think what I do, I do a good job, is pretty amazing."

The surprise culminated with an assembly at the school.

As part of her award, Mitchell received a $1,000 check from the State of Idaho. She will also travel to Washington D.C. to atend a ceremony at the White House, where she will represent Idaho in the National Teacher of the Year program.
