A Burley man has been booked into the Cassia County Jail and charged with homicide, following a fatal shooting Wednesday.

Cassia County Undersheriff George Warrell said deputies were dispatched to a Burley business in the 400 block of West Main Street about 5 p.m. Wednesday on a report of an unresponsive person.

He said the victim –- later identified as Christopher Fassett, 58 -– had been shot twice with a 9-millimeter handgun. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators are calling the shooting “a robbery gone bad.”

“We believe Fassett and the suspect knew each other and had had an earlier dispute. We believe the suspect went to the scene to rob the victim. The two had a heated exchange, and the victim ended up being shot,” Warrell explained.

A short while later, a man arrived at the Sheriff’s Office inquiring about the shooting. “One of the investigators picked up on the fact that the man (later identified as Luis Gabriel Ponce, 21, of Burley) matched the description of the suspect caught on a surveillance camera,” at the scene of the shooting, Warrell explained.

After being interviewed by detectives, Ponce was arrested and charged with homicide.

He was then booked into the Cassia County Detention Center.

Ponce is scheduled to make his initial court appearance Friday.
