Students and staff at Liberty Elementary School in Boise are promoting kindness as a way to combat bullying.

The school community is participating in the "Kindness Begins with Me" program, which kicked off with an assembly Thursday, Sept. 21.

Through the program, a monthly kindness day and theme are celebrated every third Thursday of the month, and students are recognized for performing acts of kindness.

"It started as an anti-bullying campaign, but it doesn't focus on telling kids not to be bullies," said PTA member Chelsy Bittick. "It's more about the opposite of that -- being kind, so the bullying isn't an issue."

Liberty Elementary is one of 18 schools across Idaho participating in this year-long program to put an end to bullying.

The school's Parent Teacher Association (PTA) provided more than 600 shirts for students and staff to wear on kindness days.
