This Saturday, the City of Boise will host compost give-back events at four locations across the city. All Boise residents participating in the city’s composting program are eligible to receive free compost.

To date, Boise residents have kept more than 18 million pounds of material out of the landfill since the curbside compost program began in June, city officials said.

“We’re thrilled that we are now able to share such high-quality compost with the citizens who have embraced this new program,” said Boise City Public Works Director Steve Burgos. “The amount of compostable material received through the program has exceeded all expectations, and is truly a testament to the commitment of Boise citizens to practice sustainability and waste reduction.”

The four compost give-back sites will be open from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Nov. 18th, or until compost runs out at the locations.

Give-back locations are:

Idaho Transportation Department

3311 S. State St.

(providing larger quantities)

Idaho Botanical Garden

2355 Old Penitentiary Rd.

(providing larger quantities)

Whitney Elementary School

1609 S. Owyhee St.

Boise Urban Garden School (BUGS)

2995 N. Five Mile Rd.

Since residents will be responsible for loading their own compost, they will need to bring their own collection containers and a shovel. Recommended containers include sturdy buckets, bags or boxes.

The finished compost is solely for residential customers, officials pointed out -- and no commercial customers or businesses will be allowed to take compost.

Residents interested in loading larger quantities of compost should bring a truck and visit either the Idaho Botanical Garden or Idaho Transportation Department locations, both of which will be set up to accommodate larger loads.

Recommended uses for compost include addition to soil and application for lawn improvement, mulch around trees and plants for landscaping, and as a soil amendment for vegetable gardens.

After the give-back events, beginning Monday, Nov. 20, ongoing self-serve pickup will be available at:

Boise WaterShed

11818 W. Joplin Rd

Monday – Friday, normal business hours - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Idaho Botanical Garden

2355 Old Penitentiary Rd.

Monday - Sunday, normal business hours – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
