IDAHO COUNTY, Ida. — Idaho County authorities are continuing their search for a Boise man who disappeared after jumping into the Salmon River, near Riggins. The man was last seen April 26th.
Sheriff's deputies say 34-year-old Keawe Pestana jumped in to try and help three children who fell out of a canoe. Pestana briefly surfaced after jumping in but hasn't been seen since. The children were wearing life jackets and were able to make it to shore safely.
Family members searched for Pestana until Idaho County Sheriff's Office personnel arrived, along with the Bureau of Land Management. Life Flight also flew along the river, searching for Pestana. Efforts to locate him will now continue by driving the river road daily.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Idaho County Sheriff's Office at (208)983-1100. Deputies are also reminding people the Salmon River is cold and extremely dangerous right now and are urging people to always wear a life jacket when getting in or around water.
