Ada County will close a section of the Boise River Greenbelt in east Boise starting October 25th through June 22nd of next year, in order for crews to install an irrigation pipe for the Penitentiary Canal -- and build what’s described in an Ada County news release as “a wider, safer, smoother asphalt pathway for Greenbelt users.”

The Penitentiary Canal Greenbelt Project will result in a pathway closure between Warm Springs Avenue -- near Shakespeare Way -- to Diversion Dam. “The project will create 1.65 miles of an 11-feet wide, centerline-striped, asphalt pathway with 2-feet-wide recovery shoulders,” said Ada County spokeswoman Kate McGwire. “The current narrow pathway has steep and hazardous shoulders with a cracking, potholed surface that has failed extensively due to age and erosion. Complete closure of the pathway is required during construction in order to place the irrigation pipe and rebuild the surface to appropriate standards.”

The section will be completely closed to all users during construction. There will be no posted detour routes on adjacent roadways, McGwire said. “All pathway users are instructed to turn around at the barricades. We’re asking users to please respect all closures to allow crews time to complete this Greenbelt project in a safe and timely manner.”
