Drivers need to be aware of a new type of intersection that will be the first of its kind in Idaho, ACHD is wrapping up construction and will fully open the intersection at State Street and Veteran's Memorial Parkway/36 Street on Tuesday night after peak traffic.

ACHD crews have been working on this widening project since the beginning of 2018, but the department says this new approach will reduce wait times at the intersection by nearly 50 percent.

"The whole point of this is the best functionality of the intersection, not just now but for the future," said Natalie Shiver of ACHD. "This is supposed to help with traffic by decreasing those wait times."

Drivers need to know that they no longer will be able to make a left hand turn off of State Street, instead, drivers will proceed straight and make a U-turn at the next light before coming back and making a right-hand turn.

ACHD advises drivers to pay attention to the signs and be patient because the ThrU-Turn intersection concept is the first of its kind in Idaho.

"We know it's a new concept it is not something we have here in Idaho and it is going to take some getting used to," said Shiver. "We want to continue our education process we welcome the public to ask questions and bring any concerns they see with this."

ACHD will have inspectors and engineers working after the intersection opens to make sure the timing of the lights matchup in an effort to make the process as smooth as possible.
