UPDATE (as of 5:30 p.m.): 55 year old Richard E. Dyer, of American Falls, was driving west in a 2014 Kenworth semi-tanker truck pulling a tanker trailer. The driveline broke on the truck and ruptured the tank, spilling around 1500 gallons of diesel fuel. The Kenworth stopped on the westbound shoulder of I-84 near exit 49.
Dyer was wearing a seatbelt. The lanes were blocked for around four hours while clean-up crews cleared the scene.
UPDATE: A commercial tanker fuel spill on westbound I-84 near Maple Grove has the interstate mostly shutdown except for the left lane. The amount of diesel fuel that spilled has created a major hazmat situation. Multiple agencies, including Idaho State Police and Boise Fire, are on scene.
The westbound "spur," from Franklin Road and the right lane of outbound I-184, are currently closed. The two right lanes of the I-84 merge from I-184 are also closed.
The delays are increasing in the area for westbound traffic. Drivers should use caution and use an alternate route if possible.
ORIGINAL STORY: Emergency crews are on the scene of a fuel spill on Interstate 84 near the Maple Grove Road overpass. It happened shortly after 7 a.m. Monday.
“One westbound lane of Interstate 84 is blocked from westbound I-184 to westbound I-84,” according to an Idaho State Police dispatcher. “The on-ramp at Milwaukee Street is also blocked. Drivers will be able to go eastbound toward Mountain Home, but are NOT able to go eastbound, toward downtown Boise.”

Boise Fire Department crews, HAZMAT crews, and Idaho State Police troopers are on the scene. Boise Police officers are assisting with traffic control.
According to the ISP, the fuel spill resulted from a fuel truck's punctured cargo tank. No word yet on how the tank was punctured.
There are no reports of injuries.
Drives are urged to avoid the area.
