Anglers like Cole Griep know some of the most reliable fishing spots are very close to home. Cole likes to fish the pond at Esther Simplot Park, where he has caught as many as six rainbow trout in one hour.

With opening day of the general fishing season coming this Saturday, many rivers and creeks are too high to fish, and others are inaccessible due to snow or damaged roads. Numerous campgrounds are also closed because of the long winter and late spring.

Fish and Game managers have been planting rainbow trout in lakes and ponds throughout Southern Idaho to give anglers plenty of options this holiday weekend. To learn more go to idfg.idaho.gov and search "family fishing waters."
