Friends of a longtime Firebird Raceway employee who was killed Friday after being struck by a car say he's left a place in history at the racetrack.

Joel Eggers was hit by a car near the Boise Airport Friday after a car heading northbound crossed the center line and hit Eggers who was walking on the west side of the road.

Eggers worked for the Firebird Raceway for the past 28 years as the chief starter.

General Manager Scott New said Eggers was a fixture of the raceway and his hard work and dedication to safety are going to be sincerely missed.

He is one of the truly all-time most amazing people that we have ever had work for us here at Firebird. Joel was a person that did so many things behind the scenes, so many things that meant so much to the racing facility, to the racers, and to the fans that came and attended our events." said New. "Its really going to be tough going forward in his absence."

The driver of the vehicle that struck Eggers, Tyler Martinez of Boise, was taken into custody and booked into the Ada County Jail on a probation warrant.
