BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Prosecutors have reduced a charge to a misdemeanor against a southwest Idaho man accused of hitting and killing a cyclist with his sport-utility vehicle.

The decision by Ada County prosecutors filed Wednesday follows a mistrial in June after a jury couldn't reach unanimous decision on whether 33-year-old Gavin Haley of Boise was guilty of a felony charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

Haley now faces a charge of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.

Authorities say Haley struck and killed 53-year-old Victor Haskell on a darkened section of State Street in September 2013.

Haley turned himself in the next day after Haskell's body was discovered in a small pit caused by construction.

Haley's attorney says Haley knew he collided with something but didn't realize it was a person.
