BOISE, Idaho — UPDATE: Governor Little has signed into law a new bill to provide for a "pet-friendly" Idaho license plate.

The legislation, originally sponsored by former state representative Hy Kloc, instructs I.T.D. to issue a new license plate featuring a dog and a cat on it. The money raised by the special plates will be used to pay for spaying or neutering pets owned by low-income families.

Backers hope the effort will help decrease pet over-population and unwanted litters.

The additional cost to the regular registration fee with the specialty plate will be $35 for the initial purchase and $25 for each annual registration.

Of that, $22 of the initial fee and $12 of each renewal will go toward spaying and neutering pets.
