The Boise State Broncos, nearing their third week of camp, have a new weapon at the linebacker position; Idaho product Leighton Vander Esch. The sophomore is listed as the backup behind senior Ben Weaver. Vander Esch had 20 tackles last season, including a sack and fumble recovery.
He also won a state basketball championship in high school and showed his athletic ability by dunking a basketball before Monday’s practice.
The young back has added 40 points since he started the program two years ago, and he says he hopes to be a force to be reckoned with this fall.
“I feel like my knowledge has skyrocketed and the older guys like Ben, at my position. The experience he has, I can’t thank him enough for everything he has done to help me along. We push ourselves everyday to make each other better-in practice, individual-everything. We pair up going full speed against each other. So just trying to push ourselves to reach our full potential every day.” said Leighton Vander Esch.
