The last-second shot has been the bane of Boise State's existence so far this season, but when crunch time rolled around against San Diego State, it wasn't Anthony Drmic or Derrick Marks with the ball- it was Mikey Thompson.
The dynamic freshman scored a team-high 16 against the Aztecs, including a 3 that gave BSU the lead with 3:16 left. Thompson has seen a dramatic increase in his playing time lately. In fact, Mikey only surpassed the 30 minute mark twice in the Broncos' first 10 games, but he's played 30 or more in eight of the last ten.
"From the beginning of the season, it was a struggle," said Thompson. "But now since I'm playing a lot more minutes, the coaches are challenging me and it's helping me a lot. Coaches want me to be a leader, that's what a point guard is, being a leader."
Coach Leon Rice couldn't be happier about Thompson stepping into that leadership role.
"The exciting thing for me is that he's a freshman," said Rice.
"I just think he's got huge upside. I think in two or three years, he's gonna be one that you're like 'Wow, that kid.'"
"He's hungry to learn, he's a great kid, he's a worker, and he's just going to keep getting better."
