Boise State head coach Chris Petersen announced the signing of 21 new student-athletes Wednesday, bringing the 2013 class to a total of 28 players.
That group contains three local athletes, including two from perennial 3A powerhouse Fruitland High School- linebacker Joey Martarano and tight end Alec Dhaenens.
Maratano played quarterback and linebacker for the Grizzlies, and was just named to the Parade All-American team. Joey was offered a football scholarship as a sophomore, and also has a bright future playing professional baseball... As long as Coach Petersen doesn't have his way.
"I think he's got no chance as a baseball player, that's what I think," laughed Petersen.
"My scouting sense says he can't hit the curveball. Just kidding Joey, we love you."
Dhaenens also started on both sides of the ball for Fruitland, earning an All-Atate nomination at the tight end spot last year. Joey and Alec are the first set of local teammates Petersen can ever remember recruiting.
"All they do is win championships in it seems like whatever sport, and for us to have two guys that are this level of player is amazing," said Petersen.
Joining the Fruitland two-some is Rocky Mountain offensive tackle Eli CcCullough. He was also a member of the All-State team and has been a regular at the Broncos' lineman camps since his freshman year.
"I remember way back when, he was in our camp as a freshman, and coach Strausser said 'We finally have a D-1 lineman here in our backyard as a young guy, and he's right over there...' And it was Eli."
