The Broncos lost more than just a football game this weekend- the team also lost one of its biggest play makers. Defensive tackle Mike Atkinson is out for the season with a torn ACL.

"Canadian Bacon," as he has been lovingly nicknamed, fell awkwardly out of bounds while attempting to make a tackle in the third quarter against San Diego State. The stalwart senior had been an anchor on the defensive line this year, compiling 33 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and returned an interception for a touchdown.

"He's a good, tough, true nose tackle, and those guys are hard to find," remarked Coach Chris Petersen. "It's hard when the guy is a senior and it's this late."

Although Atkinson's career as a Bronco is over, Petersen thinks Mike has a bright future playing the sport.

"I don't think it totally takes out next season. I think there will be somebody who takes a chance on him. The beautiful thing is, where he's from, his football season doesn't start until spring, so that's perfect if it comes to that."

Broncos wide receiver Matt Miller will be in the lineup for the upcoming Hawai'i game. He sustained a hit to the head on a 4th-and-15 conversion just before BSU's last touchdown on Saturday. He seemed shaken up on the play, but Coach Petersen said Miller should be good to go.

"There's probably not many guys on our team that feel very good, and that's just kind of how it is... But Matt is a tough guy, he really is."
