Broncos BCS bid busted
(19) Boise State loses to San Diego State
(19) Boise State lost to San Diego State Saturday night, 21-19. A botched two-point conversion attempt in the first quarter and another failed two-point try in the 4th made the difference in the final score.
D.J. Harper rushed for 81 yards and 2 touchdowns in the defeat. Joe Southwick was 20 for 31, passing for 164 yards, 1 touchdown, and one interception.
The Aztecs' Colin Lockett set the tone early, returning the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. Boise State's 7-0 deficit marked the first time the team had trailed since the second quarter against Miami of Ohio.
SDSU blocked a Trevor Harman punt early in the third and recovered the ball inside the Broncos' 10. A couple plays later, Walter Kazee scored from one yard out to put Boise State down 21-13. It was the first time the Broncos had trailed by more than 7 points in 61 games.
Joe Southwick led his team on a 16-play, 75-yard drive in response, getting BSU within 2. However, Southwick's conversion attempt was intercepted. San Diego State salted away the remaining 5:35 and Boise State never got the ball back.
The loss was just the fourth for the Broncos at home in the last 14 seasons.
