Battle of the Milk Can on the horizon
Boise State hosts Fresno State Saturday
Saturday's matchup between Boise State and Fresno State may be the last "Battle of the Milk Can." The Broncos and Bulldogs have no future games scheduled beyond this weekend, mostly because BSU is headed to the Big East starting next season.
Boise State is 10-4 all-time against Fresno State, and has kept the milk can every year since 2006.
However, according to Coach Chris Petersen ad the Broncos, this year's battle will be much more competitive than last year's 57-7 blowout.
"This is by far the best combination of quarterback and receivers (we've faced)... this is going to be one of those games that's going to be a slugfest. You're not going to get a bunch of easy plays on these guys," explained Petersen.
The Bulldogs (4-2, 2-0 MWC) have one of the best offenses in the nation. Junior quarterback Derek Carr has thrown for over 1800 yards and 18 touchdowns this year, to go along with just 3 interceptions. As a result, Fresno State is scoring nearly 40 points per game.
FSU also has an effective defense. The Bulldogs have forced 17 turnovers against 5 FBS opponents, the second-most in the country (tied with Boise State). Numbers like that are making Petersen take notice.
"This is one of the better defenses I've seen... Certainly of those that we've studied this year, without question. Very aggressive, really well coached. That jumps out at you a million miles away."
Boise State's offense will have its hands full on Saturday, especially when it comes to protecting Joe Southwick. Charles Leno Jr., a senior lineman, knows what the Broncos are up against.
"We know those guys can bring it. we know Fresno from back in the past. Those guys are always getting after the quarterback, always getting turnovers... But this year it seems a little different, so we're gonna have to bring our 'A' game."
